Student Leaders Give Away Books At Halloween Events

On Halloween night members of the Youth Advisory Council of the Community Foundation for Oceana County participated in seven area Trunk or Treats events, representing the Read Early, Read Often program.  Read Early, Read Often is a county wide effort in Oceana County to urge parents, siblings, grand parents and community members to read to infants and toddlers. Reading every day, everything, and everywhere will lead to success in school and in life.

The program provides the support parents need to find great books for their children.  At local events, such as Walkerville Wesleyan Church’s Trick or Treat , nearly 370 books were given away.  “I loved how the high school students were eager to interact with children in their home communities. Look for us again at upcoming holiday events with Santa!” said current RERO Coordinator Danielle Siegel.

The Foundation’s philanthropy leadership includes mentoring this group of high school students who support the distribution of up to $20,000 annually to promising youth projects. The Council is made up of 45 students from all area schools and examines real problems affecting the students’ peers and communities in which they reside. “We are helping young people learn generosity and leadership – to help build a stronger and more caring Oceana” said CFOC executive director Tammy Carey.
